Omaha

There are a lot of people who really love to play a good few hands of Omaha, even though it could be said that this particular style of Hold ‘em poker game is not as popular as its glitzy high profile cousin, Texas Hold ‘em. One may hear the game described as simply Omaha or also Omaha Hold ‘em, Omaha High and a few other descriptions that actually describe sub varieties of this game so it is is always important to make sure that the precise rules are explained to all players before the game is begun. This will help to avoid confusion and resentment in case a player does not understand all the small details of the game itself. There are plenty of ways to play that are going to be entertaining, but having the precise rules of the house is always a must.

One thing that many people do not know is that the exact roots of Omaha as a style of poker are not quite known. It appears that the game comes from an old tradition, but it did not reach true popularity until it was advanced in awareness of the general gaming population through the Las Vegas, Nevada casino known as the Golden Nugget. An employee showed the owner how Omaha worked and the owner decided to include this version of poker in the offerings of his casino. That is why in certain social groups, especially of older poker players, this game is called by the name of Nugget Hold ‘em. They are one and the same, however, it is just a more promotional name for the game that is designed to raise the casino’s profile. Players looking to go pro are going to want to take special care to learn this game, however, because it is one of the key styles that is part of the HORSE style of play that involves several different varieties of poker. Omaha is the O in the HORSE description.

It is important to realize this is a community card game just like Texas Hold ‘em in most cases and when this is so, it is played in a very similar way, but if one is engaged in a game of 8 or Better Omaha then it is going to take a longer period of time to play the game because in a high low split type of game there are going to be more decisions that need to be made based on the multiple outcomes that are possible which means players are going to have to do what they can to get the kind of hand they want most. This is why some people think Omaha is a bit complicated and takes longer to learn when it is not that much more difficult than the other varieties of poker out there.

Poker Variations

When it comes to poker, one of the most important things to understand is that this is not simply one game alone, it is a style of card game and under it there are a multitude of other varieties that can put a different spin on the way that the game is played. Most of those who are just starting out will pick a simple game to learn to get started with, such as 5 Card Draw or 7 Card Stud, but eventually most players will want to move up and try some more complex games such as 8 or Better Omaha, Texas Hold ‘em or one of the other many varieties of this game. Also, for those who are intent on earning a great deal in the pro poker circuit, there is no better way to guarantee themselves a much better chance at success than to do what it takes to learn all of the different varieties of poker out there,. Being able to grasp the types of games also helps players be able to take part in tourneys where there are multiple games being played, such as HORSE which incorporates 5 unique types of poker into one over all game that is generally going to have quite a large pot that can be won.

Each type of poker is going to have a basic core set of rules and these are based on the values of the hands which end up being the same for each variety of poker. This means that knowing that first will be a huge help. Players should also learn the house rules before they get started playing to make sure that they fully grasp the way that the particular game they are playing really functions. After this is done, then it is time to move on to choosing the type of game that will work best for them.

First, there is 5 Card Draw and this is the best place to start for many of those who are new to poker. It is very simple to learn because it only involves the basic betting, raising, calling and folding of poker, but instead of having a lot of complexity, players will just focus on drawing and then discarding the cards they don’t want until they have built up a formidable hand that they feel will do best in a showdown. This is probably the easiest way of all to get started and due to that it is also the most common game in a normal home game setting. There are a number of draw games out there from which to choose beyond 5 Card Draw

Next there are the the community card games which feature a flop, or a set of cards that all of the players at the table can use to form a solid hand. There are going to be those who will like these games best because they are most popular, but they are also more complex. Omaha Hold ‘em and the popular Texas Hold ‘em are good examples of this type of game.

Finally, stud poker is a popular variant that is played these days which is less popular than some of the others, but is still a solid choice for many. With 7 Card Stud, players will get their cards dealt out in a certain sequence beginning with 2 cards face down, 4 cards face up and, if they last into the final round, one card face up. Stud poker is generally what video poker uses in terms of a variant style.

History of Poker

As with many parts of history, much has been lost about the exact roots of the card game we know today as poker, but the good news is that there are interesting theories about where the game began which we can actually learn about. For some, it would be medieval Europe that would give birth to this game in the country of Germany where there was a card game known as pochen spiel that players would spend their time bluffing and trying to fool the others at the table. However, not everyone feels that this is the true beginning point for poker and that crowd believes that it developed in the Middle East in the old Persian culture where it was called Nas and was a fairly popular past time that used a 5 card hand like poker has today. No matter where it originally began it was during the days of the epic cowboy in the United States that poker really took hold and made a name for itself, being moved around the country rapidly and getting fans in the saloons across the Western part of the nation, as well as in the gambling houses that have always been a part of the East Coast regardless of the times.

So with the understanding that the game first got its start in the United States and them moved back to Europe where it most likely began, it is easy to see how the migration and spread of this card game was dependent upon the local enthusiasm and this also helps to explain why it is so popular in some countries and not in others. The fact is, it would be the US casinos that would really elevate poker to something of an art form and bring out a lot of different styles that had never been seen before outside of the area in which they originated. The casinos of Atlantic City, New Jersey and also Las Vegas, Nevada, in the US, would be the places that helped poker go from a bar room game to a real sport like ti is today. These venues were able to keep the game in the public eye through tournaments and other big events that helped it to become genuinely popular and gain a large following, but this is not how poker got truly popular.

The big break for poker came in the 1990’s when the web was finally discovered as a great way for people all over the world to be able to get together and enjoy a lot of fun and have a chance to win bigger pots than ever before. Online poker rooms came up all across the world and these were a big part of helping poker achieve the massive levels of success that it enjoys today. Before the web, most people played at home because not everyone can afford to travel to a casino, but after the web anyone could play at any time from anywhere. This took poker mainstream in a big way.

Poker Rules

When it comes to the game of poker, one of the most important things to get down first is the fact that the rules are going to vary depending upon the type of game that is going to be played. There are different situations where one will use certain custom rules in a setting, as well, and these types of rules are known as house rules which means that they depend upon the particular venue that one is playing in, whether it be a person[’s home, a poker game room on the web or even a casino. There are different rules that will affect the way one can win in Omaha, Texas Hold ‘em, 5 Card Draw or 7 Card Stud, among all the other many different types of poker styles that can be played today. By getting a solid grasp of the rules of a poker game, a player is going to do themselves a big favor because just because they may know how to play in one setting or how to play poker one certain way, does not mean that they are going to be familiar with all of the different styles of this game. That is why education and even more than that, simply asking the dealer, is a huge part of success.

Hand values are the absolute basis of any kind of poker game because these remain the same no matter what type of game one is engaged in. Whether or not a high or low value hand is the best one for the player will depend upon what that player decides in terms of the game they choose, but the hand rankings are the very crucial factor of being able to make good decisions in a poker game so without knowing these, players really can not expect to win as often as they might want to be able to. The values are actually very easy to learn and it is going to be easier to play and make quality decisions in terms of the bets, raises, calls and folds that are a big part of any poker game, round after round. One of the most important things that a player can learn is that they are not going to win every single hand no matter how good they are so regardless of whether the game is Texas Hold ‘em or 5 Card Draw, they really do need to get down the concept of not trying to hit the showdown every single game and just going with a fold once in a while to conserve their money. By doing this, they will be able to win back more of the money they invest with each and every game.

The primary thing to remember about the rules of poker is that while they can be basically the same for each of the different types of games out there, it is very important to make sure that a player knows they are going to need to play many games in order to truly understand the way that the games work.

Poker Hands

High Card – When none of the cards in a hand match to form a One Pair or anything else, the value of the hand is determined by its highest ranked card, the High Card. This is really only useful in a showdown where the other player also has the same hand. In this instance, the High Card with a higher rank wins. If they tie, the next highest card is compared and so on down the list of cards.

One Pair – This is a hand where there are 3 cards that do not match, along with a pair of cards in the same rank (of any suit). When 2 players enter a showdown and both hold a One Pair, those pairs are considered first for the highest value. If no winner is found that way, then the kicker cards are compared in order of descending value.

Two Pair – This is a hand where there are 2 pairs of any suit and the rest of the cards in the hand do not match. If 2 players are in a showdown and both hold Two Pairs, then the highest pairs are compared first, the 2nd highest next and if both of those tie then the kickers are compared in order of descending value.

Three of a Kind – This hand is also known as Trips which is short for Triple, meaning 3 cards of the same rank. This hand has all unmatched cards other than the Three of a Kind. If 2 players both hold Trips then these are compared to see if there is a higher rank, which will win, and if not the kickers are compared in order of descending value.

Four of a Kind – This hand features 4 cards all in the same rank. It is also known as Quads for Quadruple. When 2 players enter a showdown both holding Four of a Kind, then these are compared to find the highest value, but if they are even then the kickers are compared to find the winner.

Straight – When a player holds 5 cards in in order of descending value, this is known as a Straight. If those cards are all in the same suit of Diamonds, Hearts, Clubs or Spades, then the player is holding a Straight Flush which is more valuable. In a showdown, 2 players with Straights will compare them to determine who has the highest ranked Straight and is the winner.

Flush – When 5 cards make up a players hand that are all in the same suite of Spades, Hearts, Clubs or Diamonds, no matter what rank they are in, this is called a Flush. If the cards are in in order of descending value, then that player is holding a Straight Flush which is worth more. If 2 players both hold a Flush, the one that is ranked higher will win a showdown by virtue of the highest ranked card in the Flush.

Full House – Known also as a Full Boat in some places, this is simply Three of a Kind along with a One Pair. If 2 players both hold a Full House, then the Three of a Kinds are compared first to see the highest value. If these tie, then next the One Pairs are compared to find the winner.

Straight Flush – When a player holds 5 cards that are in in order of descending value and in the same suite, then they are said to hold a Straight Flush. If those cards have an Ace as the highest value card, then the hand is called a Royal Flush, the most valuable hand in poker. When 2 players both hold a Straight Flush they compare to find out who has the highest value cards.

Poker Strategies

There is no other wager game on the web or in the world in general that has quite the same level of rabid followers as the card game of poker. This is due to the fact that unlike so many other types of games out there today, there are very few other games which can really work up the same level of strategy that a player will get to use in a game of poker since it is not purely just a game of chance alone. Since the strategy is needed to win on any kind of a regular basis, players should always do what they can to try and learn new ways that they can do better at getting that pot whenever they are at the table trying their luck. It is a lot better to have a solid understanding of some poker strategies if one wants more regular winnings in the game of poker.

Knowing the Rules of the House

This is a strategy that seems like common sense but for whatever reason is not often remembered by people. This ends up with them not doing nearly as well as they could have if they would have insisted on having all of the rules up front and provided to them in a clear way. It is not hard to just ask the dealer for the details of the game, but when one forgets to do this they may find out that they had a whole other game in mind.

Know the Basic Hand Values

This is the No. 1 thing in a game of poker that can really be said to be the absolute foundation of the game. If one does not know the difference between a Flush and a Straight Flush, they are going to have a very hard time winning at poker. This game is not very forgiving of those who have not taken the time to determine how best to compose a hand and how best to take the risks that are going to help them get the most useful hands. Those who actually want to succeed in poker are going to do what they can to get better at figuring out how they can put together a hand that is going to win in a showdown and the way to do this is by knowing the rankings by heart.

Read Those Opponents

Whether the game at the table is 8 or Better Omaha, Texas Hold ‘em or 5 Card Draw, knowing how to read the other people playing at the table is one way that a player can take total control over what they are doing and really get a lot better at making decisions instead of having to rely purely on guesses. Those who know what a tell is and how to determine what ti means are going to do a lot better. It is about more than just tone and body language because on the web, one has to try and read their opponents card moves and determine what sort of hand they might hold if they want to get good at poker.

Know When to Simply Fold

This is one little art that many people just seem to over look. It is not a good idea to go into a game of poker hoping to win every single hand because this is just not going to happen. The art of knowing when to call it good and back out is going to end up saving players a whole lot of money in the end.
