Glossary

Aggressive – In poker, this is how players describe one another’s style. A player can be passive and not take big risks or they can be aggressive and jump on every opportunity to win, folding rarely.

Air – Lowball situations that let another player who would fold know that the player has a hand they might want to call for. It is a deceptive technique to try to get others to lose.

Action Card – In a game like Texas Hold ‘em, this is a card on the board that gets a lot of betting going on because it could help several different players. An example would be an Ace on the flop if 2 other players have Aces in hand.

Bank - This is normally the casino because it indicates the group or person that changes money into chips and chips back into cash. This is the go between that players use to keep things fair and in a home game, one person is normally assigned this role.

Blind Stud – A variety of stud poker that has all of the cards being down cards, meaning they are dealt face down on the felt. This is not as popular as other forms of stud poker today.

Case Card – The final card of a certain rank that is left in a given deck. It means that the player has the last Queen, Jack or similar card.

Discard – This is the act of getting rid of a card or cards that the player doesn’t want and it is also the name of the stack of such cards.

High Hand – In typical games of poker this is the best possible hand to have and is the exact opposite of a lowball hand. In high low split varieties of poker it is one hand to try for.

Going South – If a player is trying to sneak chips away from the table, they are said to be going south. The purpose of this move is to try to sneak them back later and try to fool others into giving up more money. Normally a foul practice tried in home games with low security.

Mark – A player at a table that is targeted by the other players because they are deemed weaker at poker.

No Limit – When the rules specify the game is no limit, this means players can wager any amount they like and bet any time they want to, all in the hopes of creating a huge pot.

One Chip Rule – If a player calls a bet they made earlier using chips that are worth more than they need, this is where a player must see if they have to abide by this rule.

Quads – Also known as 4 of a Kind, this is simply 4 cards in the same rank that are all part of a hand. This could be 4 Kings or 4 3’s.

Rag – This is a card that is as worthless as a cheap rag to the players in the game. This is a term that’s normally employed during a flop situation. If they flop has a lot of rags it is called a raggy flop.

Satellite – A tournament that has a prize that allows the player to get into an even bigger tournament that has a better prize.

Spread – The range that is between the table’s lowest and highest bets possible according to the house rules.
